Anytype
productivityprivacyLocal-first knowledge workspace with end-to-end encryption and offline support. Combines notes, databases, tasks, and private chat. Self-host your own sync network
Overview
Anytype is a local-first knowledge workspace that keeps your data on your device, encrypted, with no third-party server between you and your content. It works offline by default, syncing across devices through peer-to-peer connections on your local network or through Anytype’s optional backup nodes.
The core idea is that everything is an object. Pages, tasks, contacts, databases, and journal entries are all the same underlying unit, connected through relations and displayed through different views: table, kanban, gallery, or graph. It is closer in spirit to a personal database than a traditional notes app, which is both its strength and the steepest part of the learning curve.
The feature set is broad. You get a block-based editor, private encrypted chat between participants, templates from a community gallery, native apps across desktop and mobile, and the option to self-host your own sync and backup network entirely.
Pricing is structured around remote storage and shared channels. The free tier gives you 100MB of remote storage, which fills up quickly if you work with attachments. If you self-host your own network node, membership limits do not apply at all. Paid plans start at $4 per month.
Community opinion is consistently strong on privacy, design, and sync speed. The recurring friction point is the object model: newcomers from Notion or a traditional notes app report a real adjustment period. Once it clicks, most users find it hard to go back.
